Why is it so easy to talk yourself out of doing the thing you want to do?

You know the feeling. You get a spark of inspiration. A little voice says: Do this!

You let yourself explore it.

You imagine what it might look like.

You feel excited, lit up, alive.

But then… here comes the other voice.

The inner critic.

The one that shows up exactly when you start to feel momentum.

It whispers things like:

  • “This will never work.”

  • “You think you can do this? Really?”

  • “Maybe others can, but not you.”

It’s a gut punch to a brand-new idea.

I once read that new ideas are like sprouts pushing up through the soil—delicate, full of potential, but easy to crush. They need light. Water. Patience. Space.

But we don’t give them that.

We often cut them down before they even get a chance to grow.

And just like that, the spark is gone. You’re staring at blank dirt again.

You feel crushed. Deflated.

Worse than if the idea had never come at all.

The spiral continues.

You start imagining how other people would react to your idea and assume they’ll agree with your inner critic. That it’s too risky. Too late. Too silly. You start nodding along. You convince yourself to shut it all down.

But I’m here to say:

F*** that.

I’m tired of watching myself do this.

And I’m tired of watching you do it, too.

If you have a dream, a sprout, a goal that lights you up: please, pursue it.

There will always be a million reasons not to.

There will never be a “perfect” time.

You can always wait… but the longer you wait, the more time you lose.

Here’s the truth:

There are very few things we can control.

We can’t control the economy. Or the news. Or other people’s opinions.

But we can control this moment.

We can control our next step.

We can choose the voice we listen to.

We can choose bravery.

We can choose the path that feels alive.

We can choose growth over comfort.

We can choose the life we want instead of the one we just put up with.

So this is your reminder, and mine:

Do the thing.

Send the email. Start the podcast. Write the newsletter. Make the call. Post the Thread.

Share your art. Sing the song. Sell the product. Say the words.

Defend your inner spark.

Treat your ideas like seedlings—precious, alive, full of promise.

Because sprouts don’t stay small for long.

If you care for them, they’ll grow.

Into strong trees.

Into vibrant flowers.

Into the life you’ve been dreaming of.

You are brave enough today.

And every day.

What’s the spark you’ve been talking yourself out of?

Let’s protect it. Let’s water it. Let’s grow.

You’re not alone! I’m cheering you on, always.
